2011 --- What will it bring??

The Christmas season has almost come and gone! I can't believe that 2010 is just about over and we are embarking on a new year...2011!

What will 2011 hold for each of us? We can really tell, but we can speculate. For us, our triplets will become teenagers. Unbelievable! They've been claiming "teen hood" for over a year now, but they will actually turn 13 in 2011.

My wife and I will celebrate our 24th wedding anniversary. Another "unbelievable". I realize we are among the minority in marriage statistics for staying together so long. We attribute it to a strong faith in God and believing that we can make it through anything as long as we have each other and we are following the direction of Jesus Christ as he has our lives laid out in the Bible.

There are a couple babies in our families due. There are a few weddings on the calendar. We hope to keep our jobs in this economy.

Well, we'll just have to wait and see what 2011 holds for us all. We'll pray through it. We'll need to pray for our leadership to listen to the direction of God. Even though we often do not agree with our leadership, they are the ones that have been voted into office and they are the people that are responsible for moving our great and free country forward.

So keep praying...keep seeking God... keep believing that Jesus Christ is Lord.

Let Me Introduce You To....

....James Neubauer.

I first met James in the Sunday School Class I teach at Grace Baptist Church of South Charlotte www.gbcsc.com . He's the same age as my children and a typical boy, with one difference. James has a brain tumor. As I got to know James I was able to see that he is a sweet, caring young man who has been through a lot in his short life.

I'll let you get caught up on his story by directing you to his website www.jamesneubauer.com where you can read his story and send him a message.

Each Sunday morning James would get to church early to help set up. He would help move chairs, set the Sunday School rooms up, and anything else someone needed him to do.

James would meet me at the door each week with the same, almost frantic, greeting. "Mr. Bower! Where have you been? I didn't think you were coming and I've already set the room up. What took you so long?" And I would respond the same each week..."James, it's 9:30. We don't get started until 10. But thanks for your help. I can always count on you!"

Let's fast forward to the present. James has had many complications lately with his illness. He's had to be airlifted to Duke University Hospital on multiple occasions for emergency surgeries to correct shunts in his brain. He is currently at Duke on medication and a ventilator. He's been there for a few weeks now. We're praying for God's grace. We know, and he has confessed himself, that he is saved and will see Jesus one day in Heaven! What a comfort that is to his family and friends. It's good to know where you will spend eternity!

While he's been at Duke these last few weeks, his Mom has been right by his side. His three brothers and sister have been back and forth. He has a brother in college, a brother in the military, a brother that stays home to keep the house running, and a sister that is there with Mom.

James is a special young man. And we miss him.

Please take a moment to meet and get to know James at www.jamesneubauer.com . You'll see a link on the side of his page that talks about his pets and a need for care. The Neubauer's are not just another family looking for a handout. As a matter of fact, they have turned down support out of pride and humbleness. Please consider helping them. I know they have insurmountable medical bills. Before the latest trips to Duke, they lived meager paycheck to meager paycheck.

James...We love you and miss you. We're praying for you daily and the guys are praying each week in Sunday School.

First Variety Store on the Moon.com

Think of a place far, far away. A place that is new and clean. A place that people have started to inhabit because where they came from has been destroyed by carelessness.

This place, the Moon, is busy with new activity. Busy with growth. But this place is different. The people here have decided to do it right this time. They have decided to recycle, to watch what they emit into the atmosphere, to be careful with the streams and other bodies of water. They are wasting less and re-using more. They are smarter with their purchases…buying things that are made well, made responsibly, and made to last.

Awesome Pets - New to Bonanza.com

Welcome Aweseome Pets to Bonanza.com and the rest of the online world!

We are providing this feature article about Awesome Pets so you can get an idea of what they are all about and how they can meet you and your pets needs.

Awesome Pets is a new Bonanza.com store (www.bonanza.com/awesomepets) featuring a wide range of products for your pets.

Well, to get some more information lets ask Awesome Pets some questions.

JKL: Wow! There are a lot of pet lovers out there. What can you offer those of us with pets we consider our family?

AP: At Awesome Pets we will be able to offer a variety of pet needs for your dog, cat, bird, fish/aquarium, and other small pets. Most of all, we will offer our products at reasonable prices with over the top customer service! Besides, where would we be without our customers?

JKL: That's good to hear! We need more online stores with those values and ethics. Side note: Bonanza has just that kind of reputation.

JKL: Why did you decide to open a pet supply store...and on Bonanza? There are plenty of other places on the internet to start a business?

AP: We've been selling online for over 10 years at those "other" places until we found Bonanza. Bonanza is a fun, friendly, helpful community and the prices are right. You won't get "fee'd to death" as a seller or buyer at http://www.bonanza.com/. Why pet supplies? Because I personally know how difficult it is to find a good, solid supplier for all of my pet needs. Sure, I could go to the big box stores and pick up some off brand stuff but will it last? Is it good quality? What about customer service...am I just a number in that long line of customers? At Awesome Pets, every customer is important. Every customer has a name. Every customer has a very important member of their family that may need a Zodiak Flea/Tick System, or a nice collar or lead to show off on their daily walks through the neighborhood, or just the right aquarium ornament to make their water-space feel like "home".

JKL: I see that you offer free shipping on "most" of your items. Why not all?

AP: I do offer FREE SHIPPING on most of the products. Those for which we have a shipping charge is most likely because of its size and weight and requires a surcharge due to the dimensions.

JKL: Ok, I feel better about that. What about guarantees and returns?

AP: Most of the products we carry should have a manufacturers guarantee. However, if you are not 100% satisfied with your purchase, PLEASE contact us at Awesome Pets so we can make it right. Look at our return policy on Bonanzle.com/awesomepets. We'll take care of you!

JKL: This has been good conversation and great information! Is there anything else you'd like to share with our Pet Lovers?

AP: I just would like to thank you for the opportunity to showcase Awesome Pets on your blog. I would also like to encourage all of your readers to stop by our shop on Bonanza. There's a chat box in my booth and I would love to know you've stopped by to browse. If you have any questions, you can ask them there or also contact me using the message system we lovingly call B-mail.

I would also like to point out a few of our products we have listed currently. We will be stocking our shelves over the next days and weeks so please stop by often to see what we have that is new and unique.

Here is an awesome cozy pet bed that we offer in a few sizes. Snoozy Cozy Comforter

We also offer Zodiac Spot On Flea/Tick Control for your dogs and cats.

Not to mention toys, leashes, collars, aquarium air pumps, aquarium ornaments, and much more. Stop by anytime... www.bonanza.com/awesomepets.

We are listing items every week in our Bonanzle store www.bonanzle.com/jkl_book_supply .

I'll list a few of the items we have but I would encourage you to stop by for a visit soon!

We have hundreds of books available in a wide variety of catergories and subjects. We particularly look for vintage chapter/reading books that can be used in Home School or as an addition to your child's reading program. Let's face it, there are lots of great books out there but none can hold a candle to the good, solid, wholesome writing of many of the older story books.

We also offer text books (new and old, college, elementary, high school), homeschool resources, fiction, non-fiction, biographies, history...really too many to list here.

But I want to show you some great items that we offer for your home.

First we have a beautiful (and heavy) iron decorative wall piece. Take a look at this wall art! Perfect for over your fireplace, in the foyer, and it's rustic enough to be hung in your garden shed or porch. One side has gold-tone accents and the other side is just plain rust colored. Exquisit scroll work!

It can be hung vertically, horizontally, or even diagonally if you prefer.
Lead Crystal Pear Shaped Vase
We also are offering an eye-catching Lead Crystal Cut Vase made in Poland. You can't appreciate this until you've seen it! Check the listing for the measurements. It's perfect to be used as a bud vase or just empty. Place it near a window or a bright light to capture the effect of crystal.

Scrolled Metal Ironwork Wall Mirror

How about this nicely done wall mirror? It has the scroll-work and jewel implants that would go great in any home. You can see the measurements by following the link to our store. Heavy, sturdy, and sure to be in the family for years.
Hopefully, this wets your appetite to take a further look so please follow the links.

Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk 2010

We, as a family, are taking part in this years Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk 2010 in Troutman, NC. The walk will take place on October 16. We walked for the first time last year as we were invited to remember our dear friend Sonny Lawson (Big Daddy) who fought the disease and went home to be with the Lord in 2008.

We also walked in rememberance of my Grandmother, Anna Greenway, who suffered from this awful disease many years before.

Please consider helping us make a difference. We have set a familiy goal of $250 in fund raising and hope to surpass that goal!

Good Reminder

Well, we attended the NCHE (North Carolina Home Educators) Conference last weekend. This is our 5th year and we learn something new and hear important reminders every year.

As Home Schoolers we are very adamant about making sure our children receive the best education they can, while taking into consideration each child's individual learning style, interests, and special abilities. One of the many great things about home schooling is that we can treat each child as an individual rather than a robot-like clone among a group of other clones in a state run institution. Ok, I'll get off my soap box.

We also were reminded of the importance of good resources, especially in good written materials like stories, books, curriculum, etc. One thing we try to do consistently is to provide our children with wholesome reading. They are at the age now that Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys are favorites. They also like books on westerns, American girl (we have 2 boys and a girl, if you were wondering), science, art, history...just about anything that will capture their interests and hold it until they finish the book.

We frequent the library, local book fairs, and book shops. We are huge fans of vintage or used books. Why not recycle, right?

Whether you are a home school advocate or a public/private school supporter we should all have the same goal in mind. Making sure our kids get the best education they can without hindering or hampering the person that God made them to be.

Be involved in your kid's future. Be involved in their lives. Know them, love them, build trust and a lasting relationship with them.

History. Is it relevant anymore?

I believe that history is relevant today more than ever before.

I've always like history, especially American history. I particularly like to read about past U.S. Presidents. Another subject that has been of interest to me is anything to do with Great Britain and the Royal Family.

Fortunately, one of my son's loves history. He would rather sit down with some sort of history book than do most things, like play video games. We have one son that is probably going to be a scientist...that boy loves anything to do with science. Then there's our daughter....she is a girly-girl who loves lip gloss, getting ready to go shopping, purses, shoes, etc.

Sorry, I got off subject. My point with all of this is we can learn a lot from history. We can learn how things "used to be" but we can also learn some mistakes that were made and try not to make them again.

In our stores we have some great books that look at history on many subjects. From John F. Kennedy to how a storekeeper ran his business.

Take a look at all of our stores. You can find the links at the top of this blog and you can click on the scroll window at the bottom of the blog to see some books as well.

We offer new books, used books, and a few other things as they become available.

We also Twitter. Do you? Follow us! www.twitter.com/jklbooksupply

Fishing anyone?

Spring is almost over and Summer is on its way! That means a lot of things, but one thing it means there will be lots of people hitting the lakes and streams to try their hand at catching a fish or two...or more!

I'm in the process of gathering some fishing equipment for me and my sons so we can spend some quality time fishing this year. We are going to make a concerted effort to do some camping and fishing together. We have the poles and reels but now we need to get together some lures, hooks, sinkers...and oh yea! A tacklebox.

To help you get started as well, we've just listed some Bagley's and Rapala lures that were extras. They are at our Ebay Store so feel free to stop by and look.

If you know of any good fishing spots in North Carolina, please leave a comment and let me know. I'm on the lookout for something convenient but a good "getaway".

Thanks. Happy shopping at our stores!!

Parenting...not for the faint at heart!

Who would have thought that I would have 3 children that depend on me for their very life??? And who would think that these same three children are triplets. WoW! We were chosen to raise these little ones to survive in this world!

Well, outside of God's help and direction we couldn't have made it this far (the kids are now 11 yrs) without some help from good books. I'm a HUGE advocate for parenting literature...from the right sources. Let's face it, there are some very good people out there writing books and who know what they are doing. And there are some plain old wackos out there as well.

It's our job to discern what is best for our family and situation.

Here are some of my favorites that we offer in our stores:

Parenting Isn't For Cowards by Dr. James Dobson

Children Are From Heaven by John Gray

To Be A Father Like the Father by Michael Phillips

Just a few that I would suggest. Also take a look at our store JKL Book Supply

Create of Enhance Your Summer Reading Program

Spring has SPRUNG and Summer is just around the corner. With Summer comes the last day of school, vacations, later bedtimes for the kids, and a host of other things to do.

During your summer planning don't forget to allow a few minutes a day or week for some fun reading. There's not a better way to excercise your mind while relaxing than sitting on the porch with a good book.

Face it, our kids can only play so much. There comes a time when they utter those words we all wish they'd never learned....."I'm BORED!".

So take time to go to the library and visit the Mystery section or point them in the direction of some great Presidential history.

No time for the library? Stop by one of our stores. We have a great selection of chapter books, history, mystery, science or zoology. Not to mention a host of other subjects and titles. Literally a couple hundred to choose from in all of our stores!

There's even some for Mom and Dad. Self help, Bible Study, sports, travel, a nice old Agatha Christy thriller is a great way to start off your summer!

So give us a visit.....

Onions, Potatoes, Carrots, Lettuce, Peas, OH MY!

I've taken advantage of the first beautiful weekend this year to work up some of my vegetable garden.

I was able to plant some "winter" veggies like onions, potatoes, lettuce, carrots, and peas.

When we are free from the threat of frost I can plant the rest. I hope to put tomatoes, pole beans, some corn, cantelope, peppers....and we'll see what else I can fit in there!

I got some great advice from this book....Vegetable Crops by Homer Thompson at Cornell University. This is a vintage resource, but it has very timely information.

Stop by my store and see more great resources from history, politics, childrens chapter books, college text books, and much much more!

New York! New York!

I've been to New York City twice. Once on business, once on a mission trip to help another church do some work to upkeep the building.

I enjoyed sight seeing and experiencing a little of what the locals experience every day.

When I saw this book Central Park Country A Tune Within Us I had to get it. The book is a Sierra Club production made in 1970. It is chock full of great photographs and historical information about Central Park.

Take a look at this book and the many others we have in our store...JKL Book Supply.

Thanks for reading our blog. Follow us and feel free to Twitter about us if you like what you read!

What do you Collect? Coins? Stamps? Antiques?

What do you collect?

I started collecting when our Father brought home a stamp collecting book and some stamps. This was in the early to mid 1970's. My brother and I began diligently gathering stamps. We never quite completed the book, but we had fun looking for unique and valuable stamps.

I eventually, as an adult, began collecting Coca Cola Memorabilia. I'm ashamed to admit it became some sort of illness where I would buy anything Coca Cola. New, Old, Ugly...it didn't really matter. If I didn't have it, I was going to get it to add to the collection. I turned our extra bedroom into a "Coke Room". I mean, floor to ceiling, wallpaper border, ceiling fan, bottles, cans, banks, trucks, you name it I had it. The closets were stuffed to the gills, the floors and every corner. Almost every inch of the walls covered with shelves, pictures, trays....

I then came to my senses...kind of. I sold half of my collection to make room for our kids. I still have the other half in storage. I'm not parting with it.

We also collected coins. We would have relatives send us foreign coins, we would look for buffalo nickels, silver dollars, wheat pennies, Canadian coins, anything unusual.

Speaking of coin collections....we just listed a couple of coin price guides on our eCrater Store.

Please stop by our eCrater store or out others. You can use the links at the top of the page.

TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALL GAME !!

It's time for Major League Baseball (MLB) Spring training and we are ready!

Our sons are signed up for their Little League team and are ready to go as well. This year they entered the age group for the league entitled "Major League". Since they are avid Atlanta Braves and Chicago Cubs fans AND they aspire to play ball in the Major Leagues when they grow up....they were very excited to be associated with anything termed Major League.

They've been practicing at home several times a week in the lot next to our house. They have their bats, new cleats, gloves, "official" baseballs and are very excited about their first real practice this weekend. Then games start the following couple of weeks.

To kick our store off for the Baseball Season, we just listed a very nice Cleveland Indians Jersey. It's new without the tags, and the main reason I'm selling it is, as you've read previously, the boys are Braves/Cubs fans...nothing Cleveland allowed in the house!

Here's a link...take a look. We have approximate measurements so you can ensure it fits before it gets to you. http://jklbooksupply.ecrater.com/product.php?pid=7122696

We also have other items at our stores. Start with the eCrater link above and start browsing.

Thanks for stopping by our blog. Feel free to leave comments if you like.

Home School Resources Are Here!

We have many home school resource books at our eCrater site as well as Ebay and Half.com.

I wanted to point out a few of them in case you are looking for some good books for your home school, or to enhance your child's private or public school lessons.

We homeschool our children and a specifically look for the old chapter books mainly because they were so well written. They had real stories with believable characters and most of them had a moral to the story.

Here are a few that we offer:

Living In Our World - Social Studies This is a great elementary level social studies book.

Widening Circles Elementary Reader Level 8 Perfect addition to any elementary reading program.

Flood Hazzard by Maurine H. Gee Chapter Book

Journeys Through Bookland Volume 5 http://jklbooksupply.ecrater.com/product.php?pid=7021913 Contains 27 classic stories.

Of course, you can browse all of our books (and a few other items) at all of our online stores. Just click the links at the top of this blog and you'll be sent directly there.

Thanks for looking. Check back often for more items and some semi-interesting stories. By the way, feel free to become a "follower"....

Ready? Set. PLANT! It's almost garden time in NC!

It's almost garden time in North Carolina!

This is our second year of gardening at our home. Really, it's the first "official" year as last year was just an 8x6 raised bed with a few veggies.

This year I have stepped up to the plate and have actually dug up ground. Probably about 30x10 in size.

I just purchased some head lettuce seeds, carrot seeds, winter peas, and onion sets. We can start planting these vegetables starting February 1 according to the internet articles I've read. I'm a month behind because I haven't been willing to brave the "cold". Of course, it doesn't get too cold in this part of NC, but 30 degrees is a show-stopper for the most part.

I also bought my very first blueberry bushes. I got three of them from the local hardware/seed store. I'm very excited about these bushes. I know they will not start producing for a year or so, but once they do....fresh blueberries!!

I gleened most of my very limited gardening expertise from my father. He was raised on garden goods and carried that through and tought his children. Of course, it wasn't anything like classroom or internet teaching. It was get out there and get to work on those weeds learning. We learned to plant, weed, water, weed, pick, week, pick, week, harvest, weed....seems like we weeded alot.

My dad would plan a HUGE garden each year because he had "his boys to work it". One brave day, my brother suggested (with a hint of apprehension) that Dad plant only as much as HE could handle. My father responded with extra weed pullin' for my brother. I learned from his mistakes. I kept my mouth shut!

Now my dad is my first point of contact if I have any kind of gardening question. He's just a phone call away. I'm sure I'll be keeping the phones hot when I start planting and fertilizing. He loves it though.

I also try to use the internet and books as resources.

I found this great OLD book about vegetable gardening. It's from 1947 but is chock full of useful information. Gardening hasn't changed much since those days, other than the myriad of resources, chemicals, equipment, and technology available. But the basic how-to grow a vegetable or fruit is pretty much the same.

This book, entitled Vegetable Crops by Homer Thompson is for sale, along with many many others, at my online bookstore http://jklbooksupply.ecrater.com/. You can find all kinds of books at this site or one of the others featured at the top of this blog page.

While you're at it, look around the blog and feel free to comment or take the poll.

Happy blogging and have fun gardening!!!

Homeschool Resources and other books and Videos

http://jklbooksupply.ecrater.com

We just listed several more items in our eCrater.com store! One of them is the book called Taking Charge Through Home Schooling by Larry and Susan Kaseman.

It has a 1990 copyright but it also has a lot of useful, and surprisingly, up to date information about homeschooling.

There is information about when you are deciding to home school or not, setting goals, curriculum, alternative approaches to learning and teaching....just a lot of great information for anyone considering to home school their children or maybe needing some direction and encouragement.

We've home schooled our triplets for 5 years and it was the best decision we could have ever made. You have to come to grips with what the Lord wants you to do and then just trust Him and do it, no questions asked. Once we decided, we never looked back. We are planning on our children graduating from home school. Think about it, why would you let someone that doesn't know your children, doesn't love your children, why would you let them raise and teach your children. Home schooling allows you to instill your values and your direction into their lives.

Anyway, take a look at the book and the other resources we have at any of our stores.

So....How do you Recycle? Or Do You?

Just wondering how you recycle around your home, work, or where ever you're at in any given time?

I would consider our family "moderate" recyclers. We have the standard blue recycle bin at our home and we do a pretty good job of filling that up each week for the trash collectors to pick up. Of course, in our location there are rules as to what exactly you can throw in that bin.

The kids have boarded the band wagon with us and do a pretty good job of reminding us when we accidentally throw something in the regular garbage bag. Sometimes it just feels "easier" to no recycle.

Then I think of all of the trash in the world....and where are we going to put it all if we can't make the recyclable stuff into something useful, and recyclable again?

Of course, at work (a large corporation) we have stations throughout the building where we can separate paper, aluminum cans, glass and plastic bottles, cardboard and boxes, and then just basic trash. It makes it easier when it's laid out for you like that. Kudos to companies that are trying to give back to the community and the environment.

I'm sure if some of my friends or family were to read this they would say..."Wow, he's gone granola!" because I'm not real vocal about things like this. I usually try to follow the rules of what makes sense and be a good example. I don't consider myself what others would call a tree hugger, just a Dad that would like to help ensure there are some trees and parks around for his kids and hopefully someday, grand kids.

So...back to my question in the title....How do you recycle? Or do you? Comment on this post. I also have a poll on this page where you can vote. I'm interested in your comments.

Oh yea! Another way I recycle is I reuse envelopes and boxes for mailing. I'm sure you've read on here that I have on-line stores selling all kinds of books and other things as they come available. Well, I gather used envelopes and the perfect sized boxes and reuse them. Just another way to "save a tree" I guess. I also (now this is a stretch) recycle by finding used and vintage books and provide them to people to either buy or I donate a lot to Goodwill and other charities.

Happy blogging! I hope to here from you in some comments.

While you're at it, check out one of our stores. Links are at the top of the page and there's a scroll bar at the bottom with some great books you should consider.
