The Thing About Cookbooks

I'm not a cook.  Sure, I can fix a good breakfast, but when it comes to putting a suculant meal together I'm ont good at it. My main problem is getting all of the food done and on the table at the same time.  I've either cooke the meat too soon and now it's getting cold while the vegetables and bread are finishing or we're sitting down at the table with a promise of bread/rolls "in just a minute".

Nope, I'm not a cook. My wife is the cook. She's a cook that doesn't really use a cookbook. She cooks from experience. Just like her Mother taught her.  A little of this, a little of that to taste.  My wife uses recipes and cookbooks for fancy desserts. But mostly she does what I call country cooking. Just good food, and all on the table at the same time!

Cookbooks are one of those items that I think are necessary for some folks to function in the kitchen and also not so necessary but are collector's items. Some people like to buy a good community or church cookbook just because it's a nice way to provide fund raising.  Then there are those cookbooks that are collector's items, maybe from a famous chef or a movie star.

Functional cookbooks? There are plenty of those. They vary from the different types of foods...Mexican, Italian, American, Chinese, Japanese...you name it.  Then there are dessert cookbooks...my personal fav.

I recently came across an interesting cookbook and had to buy it. It's now offered in my store for all to have a chance to purchase.

It's called California Sizzles Easy Recipes. This one was put out by the Junior League.

Gasoline Prices! Give us a BREAK!!!

I know that the average gasoline prices have gone down slightly, but they are still very high! I also know that the majority of the gas companies have lowered they pump prices due to the recent announcement that they are going to be audited to make sure they aren't price gouging.  My thoughts are if they can lower them and still make plenty of money, they must be gouging!  What do you think?  Please comment using the comment option on this blog....

I thought I would offer some gas saving tips that I found in a local publication I get each month. These are ideas that most of us know or could have logically figured out but it's good to be reminded. I've tried many of them and they are "tried and true" to save me gas  in my vehicle.

1. Fill up your tank on Wednesday or Thursday before 10am. Gas prices rise on Thursdays in anticipation of the weekend travel.

2. Don’t let your car idle more than one minute. It burns more gas than starting the car.

3. Buy gas when the temperature is cooler to reduce gas evaporation.

4. Remove unnecessary items in your car. 250 extra pounds eats up an extra mile per gallon of gas.

5. Plot the shortest route and combine trips.

6. Keep windows closed on highways. Open windows increase resistance and reduce gas mileage by as much as 10 percent. In stop and go traffic, open the windows and turn the A/C off.

7. Confirm with your mechanic the octane level required for your vehicle. Your auto manual may “recommend” a certain level, but what is required.

8. Download a Gas App to help shop area gas prices

9. Buy discount gas cards. www.giftcardgranny.com offers a huge selection of gift cards priced lower than the value.

10. Use cruise control on highways. Steady driving saves gas. If you can, set the cruise for 5 miles below the stated MPH to save even more. (I’ve tried this on my commute to work and have added an extra day to my gas tank usage)

Spring Has Sprung In North Carolina!

Welcome Spring! We're glad you're here...finally!

I've already planted my spring veggetable garden. Actually, my Father came down from Virginia and did it for me since that is one of his favorite things to do...Gardening.

He planted two varieties of lettuce, plenty of spring onions, potatoes, spinach, and he may have jumped the gun on this one... but also planted some squash and cucumbers.

Are you a garden enthusiast or just a hobby gardener like me? I try to grow some veggies to help provide some good food for my family. I'm not a huge vegetable eater but I do love some good romaine lettuce, baby spinach leaves in my salad.

At my Bonanza store (www.bonanza.com/jkl_book_supply) I offer a few garden books among hundreds of other things.

One of them is Gifts From the Herb Garden by Emelie Tolley and Chris Meade (ISBN 0517575620). This is a great book if you're thinking of starting with herbs or if you're knowledgeable about herb gardens. There is some great information in this one.

We also have The Vegetable Expert by D.G. Hessayon (ISBN 0903505207). This is a guide that includes variety lists, planting guides, cooking hints and pest charts. A necessity for any level gardener.

Are you into Roses? We have The Ortho All About Roses book put out by the American Rose Society (ISBN 089714285). Includes expert growing techniques, information on 300 most highly rated roses, and new insights that would be helpful to any level Rose gardener.

No matter what region you are in, Spring is on its way! So, get plenty of information so you're well informed of the best practices and ways to garden. I try to be as organic as possible, trying not to use chemicals unless some pest enters my garden and I have to get rid of him in a hurry!

I create my own composte from kitchen scraps and yard waste, recycle newspaper for mulch, and do whatever I can to help the environment while I'm growing beautiful plants.

Take a few minutes and check out our store at www.bonanza.com/jkl_book_supply today.

We offer free layaway, many of our items are "free shipping", and if they aren't we do combine shipping.

Thanks for stopping by my blog... Feel free to follow us on this blog and at twitter www.twitter.com/jklbooksupply

Have a great Spring!

Out Live Your Life!

So I've been reading this book, Out Live Your Life by Max Lucado. I had wanted it for some time but I just didn't get around to buying the book. You see, I love books but I'm not a person that will sit down and read for hours at a time. I'm a read for 10 minutes when I have 10 minutes kind of reader.

Just before Christmas last year my wife and I were out shopping. We stopped in the local Christian book store to look around. There it was. Right in front of me. On Sale.

So we looked around, went our seperate ways within the store, and about 20 minutes later I met up with my wife and I had a few things in my hands. I handed them to her and said..."here's my Christmas list". It was the Out Live Your Life book, 2 Gaither Vocal Band Reunion DVDs (awesome by the way) and a desk calendar for work.

She was a little taken back that I was bold enough to just bring her what I wanted for Christmas. But I figured this way I get what I want and she doesn't have to worry about what to get me.

Ok, back to the book. Max always does a great job of just laying it on the line in his books. This one is no exception. I'm about halfway through (remember, 10 minutes at a time...) and am thouroughly enjoying it.

It's one of those books that goes chapter by chapter of how we should all be living and how we should make sure that we are sharing our faith with others to ensure they know the truth abougt God and his promises. What I like about it is that the book is not laid out like a Bible study. There's nothing wrong with a good Bible study, but when I'm reading a book I want some "story" to it and something to keep me interested. Max does a great job with this.

So far, one of my favorite parts is when he explains how his wife will ask him to go to the store on the way home and pick up some bread. He agrees, gets to the store, (and this is SOOOOO like me!) gets very distracted. He goes down the cookie aisle and remembers how he's so thankful God created Oreos. And the perfect God-inspired snack is Oreo cookies and milk. So on to the dairly aisle he goes to pick up some milk. All along the way he picks up some good snacks. Chips. Ice Cream. But never gets the bread.

He gets home, unloads the bags of groceries and his wife asks where the bread is. He turns around and goes back to the store.

His point is, we need to remember the bread. Bread is a staple. Just like God's Word is necessary in our every day lives. We can't forget to read and listen to God's Word.

Well, if you haven't already...get this book and read it. I would say that I have it in my online store www.bonanza.com/jkl_book_supply ...but I don't. Not sure this one I own will be sold. I may just keep it on my bookshelf to share with my kids as they get older.

We do have lots of great Christian gifts, Home Decor, used and new books, Bibles, Bibles, Bibles (traditional, electronic, on CD, Spanish, English).

Please stop by our store and browse. We offer layaway so just contact us and and I can give you some more information on that feature.

Have a great Sunday and as I read more of Max's book I'll post here what I find! Have any comments on Out Live Your Life? I'd be interested in your thoughts. Just leave comments.
